Starring Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, Luke Wilson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, David Morse, Albert Brooks Written & directed by Peter Landesman Sony Pictures Shocking: Hollywood has the stones to make a big-budget film about sports concussions, a serious real-life problem in the big money world of professional athletics. Not surprising in the least: Hollywood schmaltzes up what could have been an important film in hopes of garnering late Oscar contention, and in the process makes a flawed, unsatisfying movie on a topic that a good documentary filmmaker could have done right (and in fact, has; let us direct your attention to 2012's Head Games by Steve James, which, of course, nobody saw and got spotty distribution

good idea to cast popular Will Smith, under so much facial padding that he resembles Denzel Washington at times, to portray Dr. Bennett Omalu, the physician who discovered CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) in football players. In the end, it all smacks of sheer awards season desperation – make a beautiful star homely (see Charlize Theron, Holly Hunter) and their “bravery” leads to golden statues. However, given all the corners cut in this plodding, meandering opus, it's a waste of good greasepaint. Flawed in every conceivable way, opening this type of serious film on Christmas seemed like a pretty bad idea – the first week box office tallies bore that out – but then again, so was not making a film that pulls no punches, so to speak, on an epidemic that's either curtailing the careers of many athletes while ruining – or shortening – the lives of even more. Most films by “Saturday Night Live” cast members suck – for example, for every decent comedy that Will Ferrell stars in, five of them are dreck (see his current mega-stinker “Daddy's Home” for further proof). However, Tina Fey, the former “Weekend Update” anchor, seems to pick and choose her projects wisely – and is smart enough to be cast, once again, with close friend and “SNL” comrade Amy Poehler in a big screen

Film

Sisters

comedy that's actually pretty darn funny. The premise here is as simple and, well, base as anything The Three Stogges ever did: A pair of, as the kids would call them, MILF sisters find out that their family home has been put up for sale – so they concoct a scheme to hold a huge party weekend there before they lose the place forever; replace Shemp and Moe with Amy and Tina and you get the idea. Of course, the Stooges never cursed, and these wisecracking sisters spew more than their fair share of four-letter diatribes here; this comedy is definitely not for kids. However, mix in the pathos of both lead characters in serious crossroads in their lives – as well as a whole Musicals New and Old: On Your Feet! • Marquis Theatre Dames At Sea • Helen Hayes Theatre I dare you to resist joining the conga if the appealing cast pulls you from your seat as it dances up the aisles in the first act finale of the upbeat funfest “On Your Feet!” Almost giddy in its inspirational and aspirational message, this new biographical musical is a joyous excess of salsa rhythms, and hot, florescent colors and gentle pastels. The jukebox musical showcases Gloria Estefan hits written by her and her husband Emilio and daughter Emily. The show has a serviceable book by Alexander Dinelaris (Oscar-winning “Birdman” co-screenwriter) that charts Gloria’s

meteoric rise from a shy, intellectual 17-year-old with a gift for songwriting and singing to fronting for dashing young entrepreneur/musician Emilio Estefan’s Miami Latin Boys (appropriately renamed Miami Sound Machine) to becoming a major crossover superstar and part of a Cuban-American entrepreneurial power couple with her husband, musician, manager, and taskmaster Emilio. The only clouds in this fairytale American success story are Gloria’s mother’s (the wonderful Andrea Burns, in a moving and salty performance) opposition (because of her own thwarted dreams) to Gloria’s career and her relationship with Emilio; the prejudice the Estefans encounter as CubanAmerican artists attempting to crossover into the pop mainstream and originate their own Cubaninfused sound (described as a combination of classical salsa rhythms of Cuban comparsas with “a funk baseline and a strong back beat on the drums

mess of laughs from supporing players Bobby Moynihan, John Cena (!), and Maya Rudolph – and it turns out to be a holiday-released comedy that's got heart as well as pratfalls, dirty jokes, and silly scenes. All in all, it's a fun night at the movies, no more and no less. With the rest of the mallplex filled with action and sci-fi, Sisters is a worthy choice for adults looking for something more than a little offbeat. and all the lyrics in English”); and Gloria’s determined and triumphant recovery from a near fatal crash. The extraordinarily talented Ana Villafane (in her Broadway debut) not only resembles the young Gloria, but On Your also channels her sound, dances up a storm and wins our hearts with her warmth, charm, and immense likeability. And as the devoted Emilio, Josh Segarra is dashing, sexy, and charming as well. There is real romantic chemistry and sexual sparks between them, creating a portrait of a loving couple and a dynamic partnership. The supporting cast is also terrific, especially the hammy Alma Cuervo as Gloria’s supportive grandmother and Eliseo Roman as her father, a Vietnam vet later afflicted with MS. Under Jerry Mitchell’s (“Kinky Boots”) sleek, surehanded direction and choreographer Sergio Trujillo’s electric salsa dances, the musical is a spectacle of movement, color and heart. At the opposite end of the musical spectrum is the charming small-scaled revival of musical spoof “Dames At Sea” with its simple backstage and battleship sets (by Anna Louizos) and its hardworking, talented cast of six. The musical started at Caffe Cine off-off Broadway in 1966 and moved offBroadway in 1968 where this sendup made a star

of its ingénue, young Bernadette Peters. With a book and snappy lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and peppy, melodic music by Jim Wise (all now deceased), the musical is an affectionate and knowing homage to all the 1930s Busby Berkley backstage musicals Feet! in which a starry-eyed girl from the sticks goes on for the star at the last minute and becomes an overnight sensation. The characters are even named after the Warner Brothers stars of 42nd Street” and “Gold Diggers of 1933” Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and Joan Blondell. The charming and tuneful pastiche songs perfectly capture the period flavor with hummable, jaunty melodies and clever lyrics. Like the original production, this revival features a cast of likable and talented unknowns. Eloise Kropp as Ruby taps up a storm, but lacks Peters’ charisma – however, the attractive Mara Davi as Joan, the wised-up second banana and best friend, is a dynamite tap dancer and perky singer with star potential. As Ruby’s beau Dick, the sailor/songwriter who just happens to have a trunkload of usable songs, Cary Tedder exudes boyish charm and sings like a dreamboat and the winning Danny Gardner as Joan’s sweetheart dances like Fred Astaire in his jazzier mode. John Bolton handles the roles of frenetic producer and ship’s captain with comic flair. As director-choreographer, tap master Randy Skinner has devised nifty numbers for this nimble cast. Dames At Sea is, at heart, an off-Broadway musical, and it struggled finding audiences at Broadway prices. – Jane Klain

Not that there was all that much media hoopla to begin with, but Deron Williams’ return to Barclays Center just before Christmas – his first visit since accepting a buyout of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets – was a bust

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

since he couldn’t play for the Dallas Mavericks that night because of sore ankles, a problem that plagued him throughout much of his Nets career. Nets head coach Lionel Hollins was testy with the media; when asked about Williams, he coldly responded by saying that he would not discuss him at all. It was clear that Hollins did not miss having him on his roster, but Hollins had to have realized from a news point of view that the return of Williams was the biggest story of that game. The New York Mets’ signing of free agent outfielder Alejandro de Aza to a one-year, $5.75 million contract seemed to infuriate many fans based on the reaction on social media and sports call-in radio shows. The animus was not directed at de Aza’s talents, which are adequate for a bench/platoon player, but rather at Mets management for its unwill-

Veteran's Day: From Bill Vint of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA): Parker Bohn III of upsate Jackson defeated England’s Paul Moor, 210-206, to win the Professional Bowlers Association’s Cheetah Championship at the National Bowling Stadium – and moved into sole possession of fifth place on PBA’s all-time PBA Tour titles list. The Cheetah Championship, presented by PBA Bowling Challenge Mobile Game, was the first of four “animal pattern” championships contested during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VII presented by Silver Legacy. Bohn, a 52-year-old left-hander, survived a 6-7

ingness to spend money on a free agent big bat, particularly in light of the payroll savings that the team is getting from Michael Cuddyer’s surprise retirement a couple of weeks ago. The Mets could use a outfielder who can hit, such as Justin Upton or Denard Span, but after seeing the insane amount of money that Jason Heyward received from the Chicago Cubs, it’s easy to understand the Mets (or any other team for that matter) shying away from talking to their agents, whose demands must have escalated. The Mets aren't total tightwads; in signing de Deron Aza, they lost one of their Williams homegrown (and inexpensive) players, outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis, on a waiver claim by the Milwaukee Brewers. “Captain Kirk” was popular with both teammates and the media since he’s a great guy, but really is a glorified minor leaguer in terms of talent. The Mets also spent money re-signing ageless starter Bartolo Colon, who showed during the post-season that he can be an option out of the bullpen. They also re-signed southpaw reliever Jerry Blevins, who was effective against lefthanded batters early last season before a line drive broke his arm (and that incident was followed by a further reinjuring of the arm in a pedestrian accident last summer). Hopefully,

Blevins' luck and health will be better in 2016. It didn’t take long for the Al Jazeera report about Peyton Manning and other older athletes taking human growth hormone to fall apart. The idea that Peyton would have HGH shipped to his home but under his wife’s name simply

With his 35th career PBA Tour title, Parker the PBA Hall of Bohn Famer broke a III tie with fellow hall of famer Mark Roth for fifth place on the career titles list. He trails only Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47 titles), Earl Anthony (43), Norm Duke (38), and Pete Weber (37). “I didn’t exactly make a good pass at the ball in the ninth frame,” Bohn said. “I hung up just a little bit, enough to leave the 6-7, and I said to myself, ‘Are you kidding? You just handed (Moor) the title.’ At that point, all I could do was sit on the bench and hope. “When I left the 7 pin, I had a chance and that’s all you can ask for. I knew I needed a mark to win and the best way to get a mark is to throw a strike.” Breaking the titles tie with Roth, Bohn said, “is something I never, ever dreamed would be

didn’t pass the smell test. A high-profile athlete who wants to cheat would be far more sophisticated than that. The sixth annual New Era Pinstripe Bowl played right after Christmas at Yankee Stadium was an exciting affair, as Duke beat Indiana University in overtime, 44-41. The announced attendance was 37,218, about 10,000 less possible. But no matter how many titles I win, and hopefully I’m not done, Mark Roth will still go down in history as one of the greatest bowlers who ever lived.” Bohn barely made it into the title match, slipping past former Team USA member Andrew Cain of Phoenix, 204-203, in the semifinal round while Moor, an accomplished European player who was inducted into the United Kingdom Tenpin Bowling Hall of Fame during 2015, threw seven strikes on his first nine attempts to eliminate Duke, a 39-time PBA Tour champion, 265-224. USBC Records Broken: According to the United States Bowling Congress, some longstanding national records have recently fallen: Chuck Foudray, 84, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, tossed 30 strikes on the way to becoming the oldest bowler to roll an 800 series, while a trio of Michigan bowlers, Bobby Sanch, Brian McMahon, and Steve Novak (pictured below) came within one pin of perfection in breaking the three-player, single-game record with an 899 effort at Candlelight Bowl in Bridgeport. Both achievements are pending approval from USBC. "This definitely by far is the best accomplishment I've been a part of in a league setting, and it was a lot of fun," Novak said. "The whole league stopped and watched our 10th frame, and that was really cool. Any of us could shoot 300 on a given night, but for all of us to have a chance at the same time was something we've never experienced. Even though we didn't get the 900, we did do something that's never been done, and that's special." Sanch, McMahon, and Novak rolled games of 300, 299, and 300, respectively.

than last year when Penn State beat Boston College 31-30, also in overtime. Both of those universities are within one-day driving distance of New York, which was not the case with either of these two participating institutions. Either way, there is little doubt that this year’s game had a positive effect for the city’s economy, as visitors from North Carolina and Indiana spent millions on hotel rooms, restaurants, taxis, mass transit, and points of interest. The game was broadcast nationally on ABC, which also helps New York tourism. Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld concurred with a

chuckle when I pointed out that the two teams who were playing in the Pinstripe Bowl probably had the highest combined SAT scores of any squads playing in bowls games this year. He graciously added that Stanford and Wisconsin, who were slated to play in San Diego’s Holiday Bowl, could give them a run for the money. Many of the players that I spoke with from both teams were seniors who are set to graduate in May. That is rarely the case with either school’s top basketball players. I asked Duke president Richard Brodhead if he was concerned that the increasing numbers of basketball players who play there for the freshman season yet leave for NBA glory are tarnishing his school’s sterling academic reputation. “There are certainly understandable temptations for our star basketball players,” he conceded, but added that every player has to meet their academic obligations while they are at the school. He also proudly noted that Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving returned to Durham last season to complete course work while he was injured. Sports Illustrated has named Serena Williams its 2015 Athlete of the Year. There were many who thought that Triple Crownwinner American Pharoah should have been the recipient of SI’s highest annual honor. Of course, it might have been tougher for American Pharoah to attend the SI red carpet event and mingle with its advertisers at the after-party than it was for Williams. Good Times Magazine & ReverbNation: The Best Of Long Island & Queens – The Top 30

Tired of bad music? As 2015 closed out, it’s no lie that the music scene was a wild ride for music lovers and listeners. As we embark on 2016, Good Times has located some great up-and-coming talent emerging on Long Island. We sought out some of the best artists to follow this year (courtesy of the top music website ReverbNation), and hope you will take a moment to check out these bright, new stars!

Bill Scorzari (Americana), Huntington: It’s a true southern sound, though emerging from Long Island – Scorzari utilizes his raspy voice to offer a taste of real Americana. Mediacrime (Alternative), Glen Cove: A dreamy mixture of piano and heavy hitting bass. Mediacrime surpasses all expectations and delivers a rocking sound for a new generation of listeners. Reality Serum (Rock), Centereach: A great blend of hip hop and rock. Catchy choruses and deep lyrics prove these are true MCs. Barbiturate (Metal), Great Neck: The lead vocals beautifully ride into any metal lover’s ears. The lead guitars explore melodic riffs, unlike most metal bands today. Meredith O’ Connor (Pop), Cold Spring Harbor: A Broadway-style contemporary singer with lyrics that seem to fall from her diary. Huge range and a heart that belongs on a big stage. Born Of Scars (Rock), East Meadow: With strong vocals and well-crafted harmonies, Born Of Scars is reminiscent of modern post-rock. Alissa Cavallaro (Pop), Commack: With a hot, new style (think Ariana Grande), the singer’s crisp, dynamic vocals are moving and fresh. Axis/Orbit (Rock) Sayville: This intriguing punk-influenced trio has a raunchy sound that hooks you in from the first guitar riffs. Four Trips Ahead (Rock), Flushing: An engaging presence derived from strong vocals and melodies that hint of a strong 90s rock influence. The Offshore Regulars (Reggae), West Islip: From the first notes, this reaches out and won’t let go; the authentic vocals sway along till the end. Azwel (Pop), Huntington Station: Classic rock with pop undertones; a vintage sound meets his own, unique style. Red White & Blues Band (Blues), Bellmore: A powerhouse band; the

vocals fall right into place. A unique take on classic songs, proving less is sometimes more. 32 Pints (Alternative), Freeport: This deep, fluid voice paints a clear picture, while the bassist adds a classic moving 50s vibe. Newland & Miller (Country), Seaford: A harmonizing duo with a true country essence, a perfect blend of stylish lyrics and clean guitar licks. Debbie Williams (Country), Astoria: Williams paints a heartfelt journey through her beautiful lyrics; a real, authentic country singer. Scott Kuchler (Rock), Huntington Station: A unique band that blends well-executed and obscure covers as it mixes in its own style. Kayla Stockert (Singer/ Songwriter), Sayville: Raw and unfiltered lead vocals, a true talent both believable and relatable. Stockert has been dubbed a sure bet for future stardom. Steven Rodriguez (Country) East Norwich: Beautifully orchestrated acoustics with lyrics from the heart. Perfect for folk fans. The Kwanzaa Project (Indie), Uniondale: Super-heavy bassbooming party music that fits right in with the current dub-set/dance movement. A real DJ that delivers artistically. Audio Revival (Rock), Astoria: A hint of folk, the words are a story to be told. The guitars and bass are steady as a rock, offering hooks and warmth. The Jared Project (Alternative), Astoria: A catchy opening with a beat; the hard work and professionalism in the well orchestrated track is apparent from the start. Borgo Pass (Metal) Baldwin: Borgo Pass is an undiscovered supergroup in metal; hard-thrashing riffs and deep, screaming tones keep the mood heavy. Bad Mary (Punk) Kings Park: An 80s New York sound that’s been missed. The singer and guitarist keep it raunchy and real. Kate Mills (Singer/Songwriter),

Astoria: Elements of today’s modern pop, but also a unique touch of personality behind her classic voice. Makar (Indie), Jackson Heights: Deeply rooted 90s sound with simple yet rash solos. The lead singer has a uncommon, exciting tone. The Lost Souls (Alternative), Syosset: Strong vocals, tight riffs, and a melody that keeps it all going. Lindsay Benjamin (Alternative), Astoria: Uplifting guitars and drums take the lead, while Benjamin’s strong voice drives it all home.

Jessy Tomsko (Singer/ Songwriter), Astoria: A soulful voice with lyrics that seem to come from the heart. There is emotion in every word and strum. The Hesh Inc. debut single, Anderson shows no signs of slowing down with his latest album, Goldmine. The hit project was recently named one of Rolling Stone’s “40 Best Country Albums of 2015,” with Anderson John also securing Anderson ink this year on Billboard.com, Country Weekly, The Boot, Roughstock and other national publication and websites – and now, this one joins the ranks. The latest radio single from Goldmine, “Don’t Forget To Thank The Lord,” continues its climb up the charts, with The Boot premiering a special performance video. “Thanks to The Boot for showcasing this video,” said Anderson. “I hope all the listeners and viewers enjoy this special and unique song.” As 2015 came to a close, Anderson has set his sights on an even bigger 2016: The “Swingin’” singer will hit the ground running in the first quarter, bringing his traditional sound to audiences throughout the country. T

he return of one of the most unique acts in music history – the 2016 version of the real The Blues Brothers Band & Revue starring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi – will take over the stage at The Paramount in Huntington on Thursday, January 21 at 8 pm. Tickets are now available through paramountny.com. It's been more than 37 years since John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd first tried out their idea of a traditional big blues and R&B revue (dressed as bees, no less) on NBC's legendary “Saturday Night Live” – and now, we bring you back to the future, as described by the good people at Creative Artists Agency as Aykroyd and Belushi slip on their Ray Bans and their alter egos take over … “November, 1978. Jake and Elwood Blues

THE BLUES BROTHERS

The Men In Black Are Back In Huntington make their national television debut (and first paying gig) on 'Saturday Night Live' with their breakthrough, high-energy rendition of Sam Dave’s classic 'Soul Man.' It was an overnight sensation that catapulted these two brothers from Calumet City, Illinois to the heights of stardom. 'Soul Man' sparked a national summer tour, two platinum albums and the landmark feature film, The Blues Brothers. “Twenty-two years later, after the passing of

Often Imitated, These Are The Genuine, Real Deal Blues Brothers

Jake, the long-lost Brother Zee finally peeled his face from the gutter to carry on the family tradition: a highenergy, authentic, rhythmand-blues showband – with a South Memphis accent and an East Texas kick. Elwood Blues returns as ‘the legacy’ and joins Brother Zee as ‘the blood,’ singing and dancing their way through all the greatest Blues Brothers hits: ‘Sweet Home, Chicago,’ ‘Messin’ With The Kid,’ and, of course, ‘Soul Man.’” In reality, there have been many Blues Brothers (and Blues Brothers-ish) returns in the past 20 years, not including the film sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, that spawned a hit soundtrack. Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, free of their alter egos, actually recorded a fine album, Have Love Will Travel, as themselves. It was an unexpectedly spectacular disc that led the way to a full-fledged Blues Brothers reformation soon after. As always, the two singer/comics will be backed by some veteran R&B musicians, just as the legendary original Blues Brothers were.

Who: If members of the national recording group Unified Past – guitarist Stephen Speelman, drummer Victor Tassone, bassist David Mickelson, and new vocalist Phil Naro, and – seem familiar, they should: During the 1990s, the band was known as Labyrinth and performed at many top Long Island venues. They’e back and in a big way: During this past Unified Past released its new disc, Shifting The Equilibrium, distributed by Florida's Melodic Revolution Records; the event marked their seventh album release to date. Now based in Central New York, this progressive/power prog group continues to tour and perform all over the country; they're currently lining up their first shows for 2016. The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “Combining the best elements of the British progressive rock style with a distinct heavy metal edge, Shifting The Equilibrium delivers the goods in grand fashion: strong musicianship, killer vocals, and memorable melodies, all presented within a sonic landscape that cuts through to the heart of the listener.” “We believe prog rock is becoming more popular in the U.S. with each passing year, and we think the U.S. fan base is ready for our version of power prog,” said guitarist and co-founder Steelman. Added drummer and co-founder Tassone: “I like to place Unified Past into its own pocket by delivering a unique base. I try to achieve that with a balance of expressiveness and drama in every beat.” “The origins of United Past date back to 1991, when Speelman and Tassone formed Long Island's Labyrinth. Eventually, the band signed with Atomik Records before splitting up in 2001; Tassone and Speelman reunited in 2009 to form United Past as a duo and studio project only. The released Tense in 2009, and soon after signed with Melodic Revolution; in 2011, they released observations, with helped the group revive its fan base as it achieved recognition in indie progressive rock circles.
